The President's Message

I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed as the new President of the Hong Kong Cricket Club.

I would like to start by noting the contribution of my predecessor, John Hung, who stepped down after 11 years as President. John has always taken an active and keen interest in the affairs of the Club and supported the Chairman and the General Committee in their duties.

I sincerely hope that I can do likewise.

My wife, Rona, and I joined the Cricket Club when we first arrived in Hong Kong in 1983. Both of us and our three children, who arrived a little later, have been active Members of the Club since then. I was a member of the General Committee from 1990 to 1995, when it was then under the stewardship of Terry Smith and later, Rodney Miles. It was very fitting to see the Club grant Life Membership to both Terry and Rodney at the last AGM, as they have both contributed hugely to the development and success of the Cricket Club over these years.

At my request, Tony Melloy, the current Chairman, allowed me to attend the most recent General Committee Meeting so that I could get a better understanding of some of the issues that are being dealt with in the Club at present. Since my days as a General Committee Member, the Club and the Committee have certainly come a long way. The Committee is more than double in size, reflecting the wider operations of the Club as a whole and the very active sporting fraternities throughout the Club. I was very impressed by the quality and commitment of all the Committee Members.

I am looking forward to my tenure as President of the Club, and will assist the Chairman, the Committee and the Members in any way that I can. We have a strong and active Club of which we should be proud. Unlike many clubs in Hong Kong who are having mixed fortunes in respect of both membership and usage, ours is a very different story. We have a strong waiting list and very efficient and effectively utilised facilities, catering for a wide diversity of interests, both social and sporting.

I am very proud and privileged to be the President of the Club and will do my best to serve all the Members accordingly.

Yours sincerely,

John Harrison
President
