Tennis TENNIS is one of the founder sports played at Hong Kong Cricket Club. There are three all-weather courts available for Member's use from 7am-11pm daily. The Club currently enters five Men's teams and three Ladies' teams in both the HKTA Summer and Winter Leagues and three Mixed Doubles teams in the HKTA Mixed Doubles League. The Club also fields three to four teams in the HK Ladies Tennis League (HKLTL), which is held on weekday mornings. We also enter two junior teams in the HKTA Junior Team Tennis League held over two seasons each year on Friday nights. Tennis coaching at the Club has gone from strength to strength over the years, and annually sees around 250 juniors being instructed, starting with our Tiny Tots program for 3-5 year olds, up to our Junior League Team squad training sessions. The juniors also take part in holiday camps, tournaments and inter- club competitions. Our coaches also offer private & group coaching, Cardio Tennis and a range of social tennis events for our adult Members. All in all, tennis is one of the most popular sports here at the HKCC, with a variety of programs and coaching available seven days a week. If you would like to join a Club team or take part in any coaching or social tennis programs, please contact our Head Tennis Professional, Mitch Denman at 3511-8692 or headtennispro@hkcc.org. Please also check the Club notice boards regularly for details on upcoming programs and events.

Tennis Program 2010 Program Description - please click here. New Tiger Tennis Programme for 2-6 year olds Previously, Tiny Tots, now TIGER TENNIS, is a specially designed programme for Kids from 2 to 6 years. In this programme, they will learn basic hand eye co-ordination, racquet and ball skills, technique on basic strokes and, more importantly, have FUN. We use modified equipment such as mini-racquets, soft balls, mini-nets and minicourts and, every now and then, special mini-ball machines are used for variety. This is a great way to groom their skills and confidence before moving onto a full size court. Also, all the kids will receive a Tiger Tennis Hat and T-Shirt at the beginning of each term - just to make them feel a little more special.
We also have a great coaching team with a wealth of experience working with children of this age, and they will be doing a number of sessions throughout the week. Steve, Harrison, Craig and Angie will take care of your kids so you can go down and enjoy a coffee at the bar and rest assured they are in a safe and fun environment. We prefer to take the majority of these lessons in the Indoor Sports Hall, but we will also have a new outdoor mini-court very soon, so there will be both indoor and outdoor options. Application forms available at the Sports Desk and Reception, or for more details email Mitch at headtennispro@hkcc.org Tiger

HKCC Junior Tennis on Facebook The HKCC Junior Tennis Programme now has its own Facebook group, and we would love to see all the kids as members of our group. The HKCC Junior Tennis Facebook group will be used for promoting upcoming junior events and posting event results and photos, as well as results of junior league and other happenings. It is a closed group, which means that all those who apply to join must be approved by the group's administrators (the coaches and convenor). Also, parents are welcome to join. However, the kids will be happy to know that they can still keep their personal Facebook page private from their parents (and vice-versa), as the group page does not allow access to personal pages unless they are added as "Friends". To join, just search Facebook for "HKCC Junior Tennis" click "request to join"...... see you there !
Junior Team Tennis Report Well, our teams now have a rest for the summer, and a good chance to get ready for next season's competition starting in mid-September. If you would like to take part in next season's Junior Team Tennis League, please email Mitch at headtennispro@hkcc.org. Summer Tennis Camps We had some great fun with our tennis camps through the summer holidays and it was fantastic to see a lot of new faces playing for the first time. We hope you will continue learning this great sport, THE GAME FOR LIFE. The Buddy List – now available Looking for a new playing "Buddy"? Over the years, many people have needed a partner at short notice to make up a doubles game, or have joined the Club and wanted to find other Members of a similar standard to play with and against. Also, many Members have wanted to develop better singles play or have some extra practice without the pressure of playing a match. Whatever the need, we have now prepared this informal list of players, who wish to meet other players. The format is simple: all you need to do is fill out the application form at the Sports Desk. When new Members join the list, an updated copy of the list will be emailed to you. Then all you have to do is get in touch with others on the list to play at your mutual convenience. Good luck with your new Tennis Buddies !
Notes from the Convenor: The Club is always looking into ways to improve its facilities, and the next project is the moving of the ground court to the top of the car park (replacing the present lawn bowls artificial green). The ground lawn bowls green will then move to our ground court location. The benefit of this arrangement is that our tennis playing members will now be able to have three courts available for booking on Saturday and Sunday, instead of the usual two courts, as the ground court was used on weekends for cricket matches. The work will start on 21st June 2010 - and the ground court will be closed for booking on that day. The estimated completion date will be late August or early September 2010 and we will only have two courts available during the renovation period. Since the work will be done over summer, we hope inconvenience to Members will be kept to a minimum. We thank you for the patience and understanding you have all given us, and hope you can wait that little longer....... we are looking forward to having three beautiful tennis courts come September 2010. See you on the courts sometime,
Debbie See

Our end of year tennis celebration will be held on Saturday 20th November. We will be inviting each team to fill a table of 10 people and your captain will be receiving the relevant booking form in September. I know this sounds a long way off, but with the Summer holidays and everyone going away, we would like to give you plenty of notice. Please support the tennis section. Thank you.
Adult League News Men's
& Ladies' The 2010 HKTA Summer League ended with overall solid results for our teams. Most of the teams finished in higher positions than in previous seasons. Congratulations to Men's Div B for making it to the play-offs - and to Ladies Div A for finishing as the runners-up. Special "Congrats" to the Ladies B team who finished in third position after struggling for two seasons in the division. Great job ladies! With the new court coming on line in September, hopefully, we will have an even better season in the Winter League. Ladies HKLTL Morning League Congratulations to our Morning Ladies League Div 4 Team Red. After finishing a close second, they have been promoted to Division 3 for next season. Also, congratulations to our other Division 4 team who finished a close third behind Team Red. If there are any ladies interested in joining one of our teams for next season, please contact Mitch for more details at headtennispro@hkcc.org
A Last Match Report from Ladies A (the day after!!) Now this picture may be misleading...... but even the security personnel at HKCC thought we must have won something when this picture was taken after midnight, whilst they were trying to persuade us to leave........ But if you look closely at the picture, you'll notice the trophies are simply the fantastic glass sculptures which Carrie managed to get made for our fantastic captains, Jackie and Celina (thanks Carrie!!) because, in fact, we lost... 3-6 We were really fired up before the match and had high hopes. Even when that young girl who was their killer player turned up with an even younger (and just as good) sister....... But it was, in the end, a great game of tennis - the best this season! Everyone played brilliantly, including the new partnership of Emma and Andrea (big thanks to Andrea). Every game was tight and great to watch - they could have gone either way (did I mention we were 5-1 up...). So we couldn't be too downhearted. And, as our opponents and their many followers left, and we sat down to a lovely final team meal (Chinese in boxes as it was so late)...... disappointed as we were, we played well and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. (ooooh, but it would have been good to beat them). So a BIG, BIG thanks again to our captains. Really great team spirit this season - and that is down to the captains. Especially with Celina still there at every match to support us, despite being injured. Brilliant!! Finally, I would also like to give a big thanks to all our opponents' supporters who came along and added to the exciting atmosphere. When Jackie clearly stated that we could only really fit 3 spectators per court, it was a real pleasure to welcome over 15 of them courtside......Hmmmm.. Cheers to all and signing off... Laura Le Roy (soon to be Jewitt...)
Tennis Tip of the Month - by Mitch Denman The Smash Do you have enough confidence to finish a point with a winning smash? The smash is a great shot to finish a point. A lot of players when lobbed tend to panic, as they are not confident in how to position or play this shot. Only a few will anticipate this, knowing it is an easy way to win the point. Most, certainly pros enjoy seeing a lob. The smash is one of the most difficult shots in tennis due to the great deal of timing needed. The pros make the smash look so easy because they have great timing and they have hit hundreds of them. Here are a few tips to make your smash more effective. Ready Position Without affecting the quality of your previous shot, recover to your ready position as quickly as possible. Turn & Prepare From your ready position, quickly make the decision to hit an overhead. Now it is crucial to turn your body sideways to the net. This turn allows you to position yourself and prepare your hips and shoulders. Most of the needed power striking the ball will come from your body turning into the shot. A common error is that players are often front on at the start of their swing which eliminates the hip rotation and therefore causes loss of power. Move into Position As soon as you have turned and prepared your racquet, you must start moving into position (underneath the ball). Do not wait until the ball is over your head to start moving. The earlier and quicker you can move, the better you will be able to set your feet for power and balance. Rotate & Reach Once you start your swing, begin rotating your hips and shoulders into the shot. As the ball starts to drop into the contact zone, drive up. The contact point is high. Finish Turn into the shot and follow through. When might you let the lob bounce before you hit it? On windy days Hope this helps and good luck on the courts!!
