HKCC v. China Women's Match

(Arguably) Bright and early on a Tuesday morning in February, the HKCC Ladies invited the China National Women's Team over to the Club to play a friendly. The China girls got to the The Gap early to tour the facilities and have a session in the Indoor School. The HKCC girls¡¦ warm-up included a brief throw-around of a football, and a lot of sitting in the Sportsman's Bar, shielding themselves away from the wind and rain.

The weather started with very slight drizzle and didn't get much better over the course of the day. The rain did prove to be an excellent obstacle for fielding and provided much amusement for both teams throughout the day.

China won the toss at and elected to bat first. Their openers, Sun Meng Yao and Zhang Mei, proved a formidable pair as they forged an excellent partnership of 153 before Zhang Mei was run out for 58. This breakthrough was much needed, as HKCC managed to restrict the side to just 182 with the run out of their other opener who finished on 89 (despite being dropped for 0 early on!).

Annie (0-36), Chan Sau Ha (0-29), Betty (0-45) and Alvina (0- 29) bowled extremely well in an effort to take wickets and keep runs down but were unlucky on many occasions.

To open the batting for HKCC were Alvina and Mariko. Alvina was looking good before she was unfortunately bowled by Mei Chun Hua. The fall of Alvina brought Chan Sau Ha to the crease to support Mariko. Mariko got a good start before falling to Mei Chun Hua for a well fought 18. Natasha came to the crease and there was some excellent running between wickets before Chan Sau Ha was very unluckily run out whilst backing up. Betty and Natasha enjoyed a partnership of 40 with Betty playing some very dominant cricket until she was caught attempting to hoick Zhou Hai Jie over mid on. There was some very tight bowling from Yu Miao which kept the run rate down for a while. The rest of the batting faced a bit of a slump, and many wickets were lost quickly for not many runs. Agnes, Anastasia, Iris, Yo Yo and Riza did well to stay in, but fell to the experienced attack trying to get the runs closer to the target. Annie remained not out.

Hong Kong Cricket Club finished 120 all out chasing what was a decent score of 182.

The pick of the bowlers were Mei Chun Hua (3-17) and Zhou Hai Jie (3-14).

It was an excellent game played in Great Spirit and was a wonderful opportunity to build strong relations between China and the Hong Kong Cricket Club.

After the game, there was an official dinner in the Function Suites when plaques and presents were exchanged and presented to the touring side. The atmosphere was tremendous with a number of the Club girls practising their Mandarin and there was great camaraderie between the two teams.

It was a truly momentous occasion as this was the first time ever that China had played against Hong Kong Cricket Club in Hong Kong. The Cricket Club travelled to China last year to play them twice.

The HKCC Ladies would like to thank Anita Miles and Rodney Miles for their organization and support, Strawberrynet.com for sponsoring China to come over and play us and, of course, China for their excellent sportsmanship and such a wonderful game.
